Awesome Drive Adventures within Two Hours of Alice Springs

Our park is the great base to set up camp or stay in one of our many self-contained cabins, to then explore the Red Centre. Here are some day-trip ideas within two hours of Alice Springs.

Simpsons Gap

Simpsons Gap is in the West MacDonnell Ranges and only 18 kilometres from Alice Springs. Here, you will experience the towering wall of the Simpsons Range split by a narrow band of water. There are a number of walks you can attempt ranging from 15 minutes to a few hours. The Cassia Hill Trail is a one-hour round walk which also offers the spectacular views of the wider Simpsons Range. If you want to be a little more adventurous there is a cycle trail from Alice Springs all the way into Simpsons Gap.

Standley Chasm

Standley Chasm Angkerle Atwatye is as a must see spectacular geological icon of Central Australia, only 50kms from Alice Springs. Surrounded by the West MacDonnell Ranges National Park, it is located in a private flora and fauna reserve owned by the Iwupataka Land Trust. Walking access to a dramatic 80m sheer rock-face of the chasm is along a well maintained trail (1.2km each way) which follows a natural creek bed. Angkerle Atwatye “the Gap of Water” is a striking geological formation that has significant botanical, bird-watching and wildlife photography appeal.

Ellery Creek Big Hole

Ellery Creek is situated an hours drive from Alice Springs and is a stunning sandy-beached oasis tucked between two ridges. This gorgeous swimming spot has been carved out of the rock after thousands of years of flooding, and the overlapping concentric circles etched into the surrounding cliffs are a reminder of just how ancient this place is. There are a number of walking trails available, excellent swimming, and a quaint picnic area. The lead-up road into the creek is a dirt road but definitely worth the bumpy drive.

Ormiston Gorge

Another stunning landmark, Ormiston Gorge is a breathtaking swimming spot thanks with high red walls and white-limbed eucalypts. There are sandy beaches to sit and relax while dipping your toes in the cool, clear waters. Due to the relative isolation and geographical protection provided by the gorge you may see some or our native animals including the long-tailed dunnart and central rock rat. There are also marked walking tracks including the Ormiston Pound Walk which is a 3-4 hour hiking circuit that provides views overlooking the gorge. Another stunning spot well worth the drive.

Pancakes at Big4

Brendan, the owner and founder of BIG4 MacDonnell Range Holiday Park, has been cooking up pancakes every Sunday morning for park guests for 22 years. In 1997 he had the idea to cook pancakes for his guests as a way of building interaction between guests. Everyone is given a name tag with their first name and where they are from. It is amazing how every week, people find themselves next to someone from the same suburb or town.

Overseas guests love it too as it encourages interaction with Australians and international guests alike. Brendan custom built a trailer with a giant BBQ, enough to take 20 dinner plate size pancakes in one go. He supplies maple syrup, chocolate and caramel toppings, lemon, butter and sugar to go with the pancakes. Brendan has a secret recipe for his pancakes, which he makes up in buckets and mixes with a modified paint stirrer.

The record for the most pancakes cooked in one day is 920. On average in the June/July school holidays, they will cook 500 – 600 pancakes every Sunday. During the quiet season it is still 100 – 150 pancakes a day.

Never letting a chance go by to help local charities, Brendan collects gold coin donations at pancake breakfast for the Royal Flying Doctor – and to date has raised thousands of dollars for RFDS.

Supporting the RFDS

Brendan is also in big demand around town with his pancake trailer and regularly supports local community events with free pancakes; such as the Running and Walking Club Australia Day breakfast on the local council lawns (7 years running), YMCA King of the Mountain Fun Run on the top of Mt Gillen (10 years), Mental Health Awareness Day ( 3 years), Alice Springs Town Council Pets on Parade (2 years), Easter in the Alice Mountain Bike Competition (1 year).

So if you’re in the park, you’re bound to see Brendan behind his pancake trailer, in his special pancake apron, with his trademark cheery grin dishing out his pancakes. He says he never gets sick of it and loves the opportunity to have a chat with guests and see them enjoying his pancakes.

There have been many who have tried to imitate us, but none as good as the original Pancake Man – Brendan Heenan.

Spotlight on The Larapinta Trail

Did you know that we have a world famous bushwalking trail here in Alice Springs stretching 223 km from Alice Springs Telegraph Station to Mt Sonder in the West MacDonnell Ranges National Park?

There are 12 sections in total, so you can trek parts of it or all of it. There are also plenty of tour operators offering guided tours or just a food-and-supplies drop off service.

The best time of the year to walk the trail is April to August, although July is the busiest and coldest month to trek. The highest point is Mt Sonder at 1379 metres.

Experience Incredible Mountain Biking in Alice Springs

Alice Springs Mountain Bikers

Did you know that Alice Springs has some of the best mountain bike tracks and scenery you will ever experience? Well the secret is definitely out. If you are a mountain bike enthusiast or just enjoy a ride, there are trails to
suit all fitness and adventure levels.

It is very special just to wake up at daybreak in Alice Springs and experience the the amazing sunrises but imagine being out on your bike as the skies begin to lighten from a pre-dawn grey to explode into magnificent oranges and reds as the first rays of sunlight hit the ground and surrounds. This is truly a special time to be on your bike.

When first arriving in Alice Springs you may be deceived into thinking that the trails are all the same, flat, desert trails but this is furthest from the truth. Once you start, you will be amazed by the mixed terrain of rock, quartz, sand and shale plus the miles of visibility you have all around. And did we mention the wildlife? Kangaroos, lizards, wedged-tail eagles and bearded dragons are just the start. This is truly a unique experience.

Every year Alice Springs plays host to the Mountain Bike Muster. This is the world’s only three-day mountain bike stage race and every year continues to attract more and more riders from around Australia and the world to experience the magnificence of Alice Springs and the mountain bike trails.
At Big4 MacDonnell Range Holiday Park we welcome mountain bike riders every year for this event and all year round just to enjoy the trail riding. We have had so many mountain bike visitors we chose to build our own service area where riders can service their bikes. This has been a great addition to the park’s offering and one which has been greatly appreciated by visitors.
